Welcome to Abbey Consort!
We are a small choir of around twenty-five voices, based in the Scottish Borders. The choir was formed in 2002, so we are celebrating our twentieth anniversary this year. Many of us have sung since the very first concert but we have also been joined by new members who have enriched the choir over the years.
Our repertoire has evolved from single major works, largely though not exclusively from the Baroque period, to more varied programmes, still with major works, but peppered with concerts offering a pot pourri of shorter pieces from a multitude of genres and eras. This stretches the choir, keeping us nimble and versatile, we hope, but also offering our audiences a broad musical experience, from early Classical to excerpts from Musical Theatre, from folk and traditional melodies to contemporary compositions including those of our musical director, Jim Letham.
We run on a “not for profit” basis and regularly contribute to charity. We have collaborated with other local choirs and invite local musicians to join us on a concert-by-concert basis. Our orchestras hugely enhance our performances.
Like so many others, we suffered during Covid and opted not to continue singing online but we are now back up and running. Our renaissance concert was a resounding success and we perform again soon.
We can be available in smaller numbers for weddings, funerals and other occasions, for which we charge, proceeds going to choir funds.
